Individual contractor vs. Contractor of Record

Some roles you are comfortable managing yourself. Others where you would rather minimize the risk. Aspire supports both, and you can run them side by side across your contractor base.

Individual contractor (IC)
You stay the contracting party
You sign the agreement directly with the contractor. Aspire handles the paperwork, the invoicing, and the payout.
  • Country-specific contract templates, ready to send
  • Invoices generated and triggered automatically against contract terms
  • Payouts in 120+ currencies
From USD $49 per contractor per month
Final pricing depends on contract volume.
Contractor of record (COR)
You stop being the contracting party
For roles where you would rather minimize classification risk, Deel acts as the Contractor of Record — the contract is between Deel and your contractor.
  • The Contractor of Record is the named party to the contract
  • Classification reviewed and monitored on an ongoing basis
  • Deel holds audit and classification liability
  • Everything in Individual Contractor, plus local labour protection
From USD $399 per contractor per month
Final pricing depends on contract volume. Priced at $399 per month or 15% of salary — whichever is higher.

FAQs

Do I have to pick one model for all my contractors?

No. Most teams run a mix — Individual Contractor for established, lower-risk relationships, and Contractor of Record for roles where the classification line is less clear or the country carries more regulatory scrutiny. You can set this per contractor, not per account.

What actually changes under Contractor of Record versus Individual Contractor?

The name on the contract. Under Individual Contractor, you sign directly with the contractor and carry the classification call yourself. Under Contractor of Record, Aspire, powered by Deel, is the contracting party instead of you, which means an audit or dispute over classification lands with us.

What does pricing actually depend on?

Individual Contractor starts at USD $49 per contractor per month. Contractor of Record starts at USD $399 per contractor per month or 15% of salary — whichever is higher. The exact rate moves with contract volume. Talk to us if you're planning a larger rollout.

If a contract is already running elsewhere, can I move it to Aspire?

You can migrate existing contractors to Aspire, though switching providers does require a new contractor agreement to be set up. Get in touch and the team can walk you through the process.

What stops a contractor from being treated as an employee by mistake?

Classification gets checked against the rules of the contractor's specific country at the point you bring them on, not assumed from a template. If something about the engagement starts to look more like employment, that gets flagged before it becomes a regulatory problem rather than after.

How fast does a payment actually move?

Payments go out in the next payment run cycle, converted into the contractor's local currency at the point of payout — no separate transfer needs to be initiated per contractor.

What happens if a contractor becomes a full-time hire?

Moving a contractor to a full-time role requires a new contract to be set up — it can't be converted directly. If you're looking to hire them full-time, Aspire EOR can get them employed in 150+ countries without a local entity.

What can a contractor see and do on their own?

Contractors have their own portal where they can view their earnings history, update their documents, and track what's been paid — reducing back-and-forth with your team.
